In HögforsGST’s career stories, we introduce our experts and their career paths. This time, we hear from Salla Varis, who has built her career in an entirely new field with the help of her open-minded attitude and determination.

From healthcare to HögforsGST – where did the career shift begin?

Salla originally graduated as a practical nurse in 2013 and worked in the healthcare sector for several years. Over time, however, the working conditions in the field led her to consider a new direction for her career, even though the next step was not immediately clear.

The turning point came through a simple yet bold decision. Salla picked up the phone and called HögforsGST’s production team to ask if there were any job opportunities. With no prior education or experience in the field, it took determination and a few follow-up calls before things started to move forward. Eventually, her persistence paid off, and she was invited to a job interview at the factory. At the end of the interview, she was already asked when she could start. Salla began working at the HögforsGST factory in 2018 through a staffing agency. Her positive attitude was quickly recognized, and the following year she became a permanent employee.

Learning by doing

Salla’s first tasks were in production assembly support, where she assembled components and assisted in various tasks to keep production running smoothly. Already during her first summer, her responsibilities expanded gradually. She gained experience in pressure testing and painting components. Later, she also supported the warehouse when additional help was needed. Step by step, she became familiar with warehouse operations, including handling incoming and outgoing goods. Over time, Salla built a comprehensive understanding of the different stages of HögforsGST’s production.

Later, her role expanded to include component logistics, a task she has been most occupied with over the years. The work itself has also evolved alongside improvements in the working environment. For example, a new storage system and digital tools for warehouse management have significantly streamlined daily operations.

“Attitude has made the difference – I entered the field without any formal education and still managed to progress in my career,” Salla summarizes.

In addition to production work, Salla has also gained experience in production planning on the office side. Not every role has felt like the perfect fit, but trying new things has been an important part of her career development.

Always something new to learn

The latest step in Salla’s journey at HögforsGST took place in spring 2026, when she once again chose to take on a new challenge. With the support of her colleagues in assembly, she has learned welding and other assembly tasks.

Learning new skills has been easier because the products were already familiar from her previous roles. The encouraging atmosphere in production has also made it safe to challenge herself and take on new responsibilities, with help always available when needed.

“Constantly learning something new keeps the job exciting for me. It’s great that after so many years, there are still such interesting opportunities for growth within the same company,” Salla says.

A supportive work community makes everyday life better

According to Salla, the best thing about HögforsGST is its people. The factory has a positive and supportive atmosphere, and the culture is highly equal. Colleagues often become friends who support each other not only at work but also in everyday life.

Her experience over the years has also shown that flexibility and understanding for different life situations are genuinely present in everyday work.

“HögforsGST is a great place to work. There is flexibility on both sides, and work-life balance is truly valued,” Salla concludes.
